Kids oasis for children from 4 to 10 years old by the Leiden migrant support desk
Kids oasis is an initiative of the Leiden migrant support desk to fill the gaps in the integration process and start at an early age. This reduces inequality and is part of strategic sustainable development so that everyone is provided with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes needed to bring about fruitful change in society.
International research has shown that interventions in early childhood can help reduce inequality. Research by the Central Planning Bureau in the Netherlands shows that children with a migration background, on average, start out with a disadvantage in language and arithmetic compared to children without a migration background. Children of parents with a lower income or education level also perform less well in language and arithmetic than children of parents with a higher income and education level. Children with a migration background relatively often have parents with a lower income.
Our mission is to build a ‘modern social contract’ to achieve a humane, just, inclusive, and sustainable foundation for our future society. Building this modern social contract is not limited to discourse and is not just words, but is a long-term process of building the modern norms and values to make our world, cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
Method
Kids Oasis is a project where children are read to by enthusiastic volunteers. Because it is important for these children in particular that they have access to appealing books and stories. This stimulates children’s language development and brings people into contact with each other. A good story can lead to creativity, relaxation, a larger vocabulary and contributes to the child’s image. Books also provide emotional support to children and give them access to a new world. In addition to the reading, an activity will always be offered that fits the story.
